How your Handicap Index is calculated
A Handicap Index is a portable measure of your demonstrated ability. Under the World Handicap System it is built from score differentials — one per round — each of which normalizes your score for how hard the course played.
Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope) × (Adjusted Score − Course Rating)
Your index is the average of the lowest differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. With fewer than 20, a reduced table decides how many count and applies a small adjustment:

Example: say your five most recent rounds give differentials of 14.2, 16.0, 12.8, 18.5, and 15.1. With five rounds only your single lowest differential counts — 12.8 — with no adjustment, so your Handicap Index is 12.8.
Is this the same as my GHIN handicap?
Yes — the calculation is identical. GHIN is the USGA’s official service for posting scores and publishing your Handicap Index; this tool uses the same WHS formula to estimate that index from the rounds you enter. It does not post scores to GHIN or replace an official club membership. To keep an official record, post through your club; to track your index automatically as you play, use Flash Caddie.
One score is not eligible either way: a simulator round. WHS requires a score to come from a golf course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating, which a simulator is not — so leave sim scores out of this calculator and out of GHIN. - How is a golf handicap calculated?
- Each round produces a score differential: (113 ÷ Slope) × (Adjusted Score − Course Rating). Your Handicap Index is the average of your lowest differentials over your most recent 20 rounds. With fewer than 20 rounds, a reduced table sets how many count and applies a small adjustment.
- How many rounds do I need to get a handicap?
- You need at least 3 rounds (54 holes) to establish a Handicap Index. The estimate becomes more stable as you approach 20 rounds, when it uses your lowest 8 differentials.
- What is a good golf handicap?
- The average male golfer sits around a 14 index and the average female around 28. A single-digit handicap (under 10) is strong; scratch means a 0.0. Anything that trends downward over time is progress.
- Is this the same as a GHIN or official handicap?
- The math is identical. GHIN is the USGA’s official service for posting scores and publishing your index; this tool uses the same WHS formula to estimate it from the rounds you enter. It does not post scores to GHIN or replace an official membership.
- What is the difference between a Handicap Index and a Course Handicap?

- What is an adjusted gross score?
- It is your score with a maximum per hole (net double bogey) applied, so one blow-up hole doesn’t distort your handicap. Enter your adjusted score for the most accurate index.
- Do simulator rounds count toward your handicap?
- No. Under the World Handicap System an acceptable score must be played on a golf course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating, during its active season — and a simulator is not a rated golf course, even when it renders one. Do not enter simulator rounds here or post them to GHIN; they run lower than real golf and would drag your index down artificially.
- Do you store my scores?
