How to get a golf handicap

You get a golf handicap by posting at least 54 holes of golf (three 18-hole rounds) through a handicap provider. There are three routes: join a golf club affiliated with your national association (GHIN in the US), join an allied golf association online for a small annual fee, or track your index yourself with an app — official for competitions in the first two cases, instant and free in the third.

Option 1 — Join a golf club (the traditional route)

Any club affiliated with the USGA (or your national association) can enroll you in GHIN, the official handicap service. You post scores after each round, and your official Handicap Index updates overnight. Cost is bundled into membership. This is the route to take if you play club competitions — most require an official index.

Option 2 — Join an allied golf association online

You do not need to belong to a private club. Most state and regional golf associations offer individual memberships (typically $30–60/year) that include an official GHIN index. Search for your state golf association, join online, and you can start posting the same day. Public-course golfers use this route.

Option 3 — Track it yourself (free, unofficial, instant)

What you need in every case

1. 54 posted holes. Three 18-hole rounds (or six 9-hole rounds) is the WHS minimum to establish an index.
2. Rated courses. Rounds count only on courses with a course rating and slope — virtually every real course has them on the scorecard.
3. Honest scores. Play by the rules, hole out or take your most likely score, and cap holes at net double bogey.

Your first index arrives with a small safety adjustment (lowest differential minus 2.0 at exactly 3 rounds) and firms up as you approach 20 posted rounds.
