How does a golf handicap work?

A golf handicap is a number that represents your demonstrated playing ability — the lower, the better. Under the World Handicap System (WHS), your Handicap Index is the average of your best 8 score differentials from your last 20 rounds, so it reflects your potential, not your average day. Its job is to let golfers of different abilities compete fairly: a 20-handicap can play a 5-handicap and both have a real chance.

The three numbers, untangled

Most confusion about handicaps comes from three related-but-different numbers being called “your handicap.” Here is what each one is:

NumberWhat it isWhen you use it
Handicap IndexYour portable ability number (e.g. 14.2), from your best 8 of 20 differentials.Travels with you to any course.
Course HandicapYour index converted for a specific course and tees, using slope and rating. The strokes you actually receive on the day.
Playing HandicapYour course handicap adjusted for the format (e.g. 85% in fourball).Competitions with a handicap allowance.

When someone asks “what do you play off?”, they usually mean your Handicap Index. You can convert it for any course with our free course handicap calculator.

Where the number comes from

Every round you post produces a score differential — a measure of how well you played relative to the difficulty of the course that day:

Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope) × (Adjusted Score − Course Rating)

The 113 is the “standard” slope. A harder course (higher slope, higher rating) forgives a higher score — shoot 90 at a brutal course and your differential can beat an 88 at an easy one. Your Handicap Index is the average of your lowest 8 differentials from your most recent 20 rounds, rounded to one decimal.

Why it uses your best rounds, not your average

A handicap measures what you are capable of, not what you shoot on a typical Saturday. Averaging your best 8 of 20 means roughly your top 40% of rounds set your number — which is why most golfers only “play to their handicap” about one round in four or five. That is by design, not a flaw.

Frequently asked questions

What handicap does a beginner start with?
You start with no handicap at all — you establish one by posting 54 holes (three 18-hole rounds or any combination reaching 54). The maximum initial Handicap Index under WHS is 54.0.
Is a lower golf handicap better?
Yes. A lower handicap means fewer strokes needed relative to par. A scratch golfer plays off 0, and a plus handicap (e.g. +2) is better than scratch.
Do casual rounds count toward a handicap?
Under WHS, recreational rounds count as long as you play by the rules and post the score. You do not need tournament rounds — most posted scores are ordinary weekend golf.
What is the maximum golf handicap?
The maximum Handicap Index under the World Handicap System is 54.0 for all golfers.
